It was a bumper weekend for rowing with crews at the Bedford Regatta and Jake Birch and Freddie Middleton racing for Great Britain U19s at the Munich Junior Regatta, bringing home medals. In cricket we played a block fixture against Pangbourne at the weekend.
Rowing
The Boat Club travelled to Bedford on Saturday to compete in a traditional side by side river regatta:
- Year 10 A boat beat Mossbourne Academy by two lengths
- Year 11 quad lost to Kings Ely's school
- Year 10 B boat lost to Eton College
- 3rd 8 lost to Radley by only half a length
- J14 A boat beat Bedford School
- Year 9 B boat lost to St Paul's School
Well done to all those who raced and gained valuable experience to take forward to the next regatta at Thames Ditton this Saturday.
The Boat Club also did some International travel this weekend. Jake Birch and Freddie Middleton were selected to race for Great Britain U19s at Munich Junior Regatta. Jake Birch raced in the coxless 4 on Saturday and made the A final finishing in 6th place. Freddie Middleton raced in a coxless pair and won a silver medal behind the German National pair that won a Silver medal at the Junior World Championships last year. On Sunday the boys joined forces and raced in the men's eight. After winning their heat in fine form they went into the A final. In the final they raced hard to win a Bronze medal only 1.7 seconds off Gold won by the Germans, Silver position was won by a the Ukrainian National eight.
Cricket
Saturday saw a block fixture against Pangbourne. The performance of the day came from the U15A team with O Morris taking 3/23 and an unbeaten partnership of 40 to win the game by B Stokes and V Clifford. Other notable performances included another 50 from J Angell, 5 wickets for T Barley and a top score again for the U14A’s leading batsman F Partridge.
Tennis
Three tennis fixtures were played between Tuesday 5 and Saturday 7 of May. The first being a junior doubles tournament at Pangbourne, between the hosts, Leighton Park School, The Oratory School and Crossfields. The Lower School currently has a very strong selection of tennis players, and it was quite a job for the Lower School captain to narrow his selection to four. After a good few sets against a strong field Shiplake came second overall.
Next, on to the Colts fixture played against Leighton park. Each pair played their opposite numbers, with our Year 10 first pair overcoming Leighton Park's second pair with relative ease. Our second pair made up of Year 9 pupils put up an impressive resistance against a strong Year 10 pair, eventually losing 7-5 but pushing their opponents to the edge. At the change, and playing their equivalent pairs, motivated by the near miss, our Year 9 team made short work of their opponents. The same cannot be said of the first pair, who after a grueling match succumbed in two sets, leaving the overall score a draw at 3 sets all.
Finally, owing to a clash the girls team was reduced to two players against The Oratory. Both our girls played two singles and one doubles match. The matches were incredibly close despite the score. The final, played as doubles was particularly close, but Shiplake ultimately lost the fixture in 3 sets.
