Mathematics

Whether you love it or hate it, maths is an essential part of our daily lives. From simple addition to complex calculus, it helps us make sense of the world around us. And, to mark today's World Maths Day, we take the opportunity to recognise and celebrate all things Mathematics here at Shiplake College!

Following on from the intermediate maths challenge earlier this term, Deputy Head (Academic) Mr Jones awarded a number of certificates to pupils in Years 9 to 11. The Intermediate Mathematical Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice challenge. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

Congratulations to the following pupils:

Year 9

  • Erik Gierakowski - Bronze Award

Year 10

  • George Blumfield - Gold Award
  • Isaac Powell - Gold Award
  • TianYi Zhou - Silver Award

Year 11

  • Samuel Bailey - Silver Award
  • Liam Cawdell - Gold Award
  • Joshua Dawn - Silver Award
  • James Lucking - Silver Award
  • James Webb - Silver Award

A special congratulations must also go to George Blumfield who, following his score in this challenge, will now go on to represent the College in the Pink Kangaroo competition as one of the top 5% of mathematicians across the country in his age group! The Pink Kangaroo is a follow-on round to the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge with entry being by invitation only. The challenge will take place on Thursday 16 March - good luck George!

Internally, the House Maths Competition kicked off on Monday 6 March with Lower School pupils representing their houses - Olympians, Spartans, and Titans - to bring back the coveted Shiplake-engraved tankard! After a tense battle where each House took each other on in a maths quiz, the Titans came out on top to win this year's Lower School House Maths Competition - well done to everyone who got involved!

Next week will see the competition return for the senior pupils; watch this space to see which House will emerge victorious...
