Our fixtures this week were in cricket and netball with some mixed results. Both the A and B netball teams played their last matches of the season against Claires Court School and our cricket teams had fixtures against John Hampden Grammar School and Reading Blue Coat.

Cricket

U12/U13 A v John Hampden Grammar School

Dark clouds were hovering over Shiplake College but the game was underway on time. Our captain Indigo Doherty unfortunately lost the toss so John Hampden chose to field first. The Shiplake opening batsmen Indigo Doherty and Ben Savidge, lead the team off with a solid foundation of 41 runs off 11 overs. Vice-captain Freddie Holgate then came in batting, raring to go, scoring on his first ball and got a top score of 27. All the other batsmen contributed well to the game, scoring 97 runs for Shiplake for their innings. This was a decent score but the boys knew it would be tough in the field.

John Hampden started off their innings well with 8 runs after only one over. However with some brilliant bowling and fielding from the team, we collectively took regular wickets, also there was an over in which J Zacharius got three wickets, putting us on the front foot and giving us an advantage by getting their better players out early. It was getting tight between both the teams nearer to the end and John Hampden were creeping up towards our score, they needed 25 runs from the last 5 overs, but with an organised field and great bowling we got them all out with a nice finishing wicket from Freddie Holgate to win the match.

Overall all the boys played brilliantly and it was well deserved. That continues our 100% winning record for the season.

Netball

A Team v Claires Court School

On Wednesday, the girls played a great final match of the year in netball. The girls all played tremendously, specifically Anna Galpin who received player of the match. The girls unfortunately ended up losing the match 21-27 to Claires Court, however all their efforts were counted and they played well as a team. We began winning in the first quarter with 10 to Shiplake, following a competitive second quarter where Claires Court picked up the pace 17-13. The game was very well played even though the A team had a few members short. The girls were able to work together cooperatively, with great leadership from Georgina Garner and Maddie Adams; as well as great play from Maddie Fisher who was brought up from the B team. I want to say a massive thank you to Miss Mordue for organising all of these matches over the last term even with the difficulty of Covid-19 and the social distancing. It was an amazing last match and a great game to end on a high. Well played everyone.
