With more and more of our pupils expressing a keen interest in composing, arranging and producing music, our Director of Music, Mr Curran, launched the College's first Young Composer Award before the Easter holidays. Open to pupils in all year groups this competition attracted entries from EDM, Lo Fi, Hip Hop, Fusion and Popular singer-songwriter genres. Mr Curran provides a review:
"I would like to give a special mention to Lewis O'Donoghue for sketching two hauntingly beautiful songs that we intend to record early in the new academic year. I would also like to commend Leo Slowikowski for crafting a Britpop-inspired song that will hopefully make it onto the stage at Shiplake Rocks in just over a month's time.
"I would like to thank all of the young composers who entered, for sharing their creativity and love of music through this medium. I am delighted to announce that the winner and first recipient of Shiplake College's Young Composer Award is none other than one of our Year 11 GCSE Music pupils, Milo Griffiths. With a stunning simplicity in style this work was selected as the winning entry for its 'completeness': unconventional yet simple harmonic structure with a wistful, melancholy melody weaving through the carefully balanced texture of acoustic and electric instruments."
You will have the chance to hear Milo's winning song 'Artificial Light' at Shiplake Rocks which will be broadcast on the College's Youtube channel at 7.30pm on Wednesday 23 June (previously billed for broadcast on Friday 18 June).
Congratulations Milo! We suspect we will be hearing much more from Milo in the coming years as he hones his songwriting craft.
