This afternoon, pupils and staff from across the College made their way to the Lecture Theatre for the third and final Lunchtime Concert of the term.

The Lunchtime Concerts provide an amazing opportunity for musicians of all abilities to have a go at performing on stage in front of pupils and teachers, whether it is their first time on stage or whether they are a master of performing.

This concert proved to be no exception with a real mix of experienced and new performers, as well as a special Christmas surprise to finish off the show.

First to perform was James Martin of Year 8 who performed on the piano. James has previously performed on this instrument and last year played Skyfall. However, today, James channelled his inner ‘King of Pop’ with his rendition of Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal. A fast and highly technical piece, James made light work of this and, perhaps more impressively, played the piece from memory.

Next to perform was Year 7’s F Woodland in which today’s concert marked his first performance on stage. With visiting music teacher Mrs Kench accompanying on the piano, together they performed Perfect by Ed Sheeran. With nerves bound to be present, it proved to be an excellent performance and deservedly received two rounds of applause from the audience. It takes a lot of courage and bravery to come out on stage and perform and we’re sure that this will be the first of many performances on stage.

In another performance on the piano, the next pupil to take to the stage was Year 9’s Sena Hughes. A veteran now in stagecraft, Sena has performed in many Lunchtime Concerts and also in our distinguished Soloist Concert. In today’s Lunchtime Concert, he performed Summer Days by Joe Hisaishi.

Noah Scotchbrook of Year 12 performed next with two songs. In what was a special performance, Noah’s singing was recorded in full as it is going to be used for one of his BTEC music coursework assignments. With Mrs Rapple Moore accompanying on the piano, Noah sang Nice Work if You Can Get by George Gershwin and What I Did For Love by Marvin Hamlisch.

Last to take the stage were Bublé’s Baubles in what was the Lunchtime Concert’s special Christmas surprise. In a performance that certainly lived up to expectations, Bublé’s Baubles, consisting of Year 9 pupils Jack Dag, Zac Fisher and Will Griffith, sang Last Christmas by Wham! However, in this rendition, the boys were dressed up in inflatable costumes comprising of a snowman, a penguin, and Father Christmas. With the audience thoroughly entertained, the performance wonderfully capped off the Lunchtime Concert series for this term.

Thank you to everyone who attended today’s concert and well done to everyone who performed!
