Hot on the heels of the Year 9, last week, it was the turn of Year 10 to battle it out in the  Lecture Theatre for the hotly contested Year 10 Inter-House Debate.

Organised by Mr Player, the debate was about encouraging each house to research the subject matter in detail and put together a robust and convincing argument to state their case.

Two representatives from each house, Skipwith, Orchard, Everett, Burr and Welsh, had 60 seconds to say whether they agreed or disagreed with the following statements and give their reasons backed up with evidence and fact: "The Government is doing enough in the effort to stop the spread of COVID-19" and "The Royal Family should be abolished".

Each house was then invited to challenge other members on the panel, and the audience members were invited to ask questions of specific house members.

The debate was well fought between the houses, and the judges were not unanimous, but in the end Everett shone through as the victors, despite being challenged persistently by Burr and Welsh. Well done to Oliver Smee and Ben Watkins for their considered arguments and convincing rebuttals.

Headmaster Mr Howe had this to say in assembly on Monday:

"Congratulations to Ben Watkins and Ollie Smee for successfully winning the Year 10 Inter-House Debating Contest for Everett House.

"It was fiercely contested with Noah Scotchbrook and Ben Brooks also standing out in a high quality field. All the contestants did a great job of preparing and speaking out about some big and complex issues.

"Thank you to the Year 10 audience and also to the Sixth Former judges, Freddie Westbrook-Burr, Katie Baxter and James Radford, who had a really difficult decision on their hands as to who should be the winner."

"Well done to everybody and thank you to Mr Player for organising the event."

Next time it will be Year 11 in the hot seat.
