Co-Curricular Houses

High quality artwork has decorated the Great Hall over the past few weeks after the unveiling of the inter-house art competition. A number of pupils excelled individually, but a level of consistency was also required to build up House points. After much deliberation, the judge awarded victory to Orchard House.

There was a diverse range of artistic media on display with a number of portraits, landscape paintings, sculptures and photographs. An impressive elephant sculpture (pictured above) certainly caught the eye, along with a portrait of the Rev.

Local artist Beryl was invited to judge the competition. Beryl owns her studio in Buckinghamshire, running a broad range of design classes and supplying major retailers with her knitted accessories. She has exhibited internationally and been featured in high profile magazines, making her extremely well-qualified to judge the talented pupils’ work. That said, she still found it incredibly difficult to select the winning entries. In each category, one point was awarded for second place with two points for the winner.

Head of Art Mrs Hema Gillings commented: ‘I would like to start by congratulating all pupils who entered the House art competition. It is obvious from the level of work that pupils have put in a lot of time and effort. A high standard of work was submitted with each drawing, painting and photograph displaying pupils’ individual personal response to a given theme. The photography in Year 9 and 10 was particularly excellent and I look forward to seeing more in the future.'
