Sports Report

It was a busy weekend of sport which is the focus of today's Sports Report! In rowing, our senior girls were competing at Henley Women's Regatta while our junior and senior boys were racing at the Marlow International Regatta. And after a delay to bad weather, the Shiplake Open Tennis Finals got underway in glorious sunshine with five finals being played!

Rowing

Heney Women’s Regatta and Marlow Regatta

We had two crews competing at Henley Women's Regatta with the Girls' 4x- making the quarterfinals and the Girls’ 8+ reaching the semi-finals. The 8+, consisting of A Merritt, Sophia Foreman, Emily Over, Katie Proudlove, Amelie Parker, Emily Downing, Amelia Westbrook, Lara Vahle, and cox Oli Joiner were defeated by the eventual winners Headington School. This strong performance, along with their results in previous competitions, means that our girls' 8+ has pre-qualified for Henley Royal Regatta.

At the Marlow International Regatta, six crews were in action which included a J14 8x+, a J15 1st 8+, a J18 4x, a Championship 8+, a Junior 8+, and a Junior 4+. The J15 1st 8+ and J18 4x crews both had strong time trials which saw them qualify for the A Finals where they both placed 8th overall. The J14 8x+ qualified for a B Final which they won, while our Junior 8+ came 4th in their B Final.

Tennis - Shiplake Open

The Shiplake Open Tennis this year was nothing short of a splendid affair - a veritable feast for the senses! The air was positively abuzz with the scent of fresh strawberries and the clinking of ice in glasses of Pimm’s. It was, indeed, an extravaganza that transcended mere sport.

The courts were graced by the remarkable Polina Brown, who, with the poise of a seasoned debutante at her first ball, made it to an astonishing three finals. Her finesse on the court was matched only by her indefatigable spirit—a true spectacle of athleticism!

And let us not forget the gentlemen, Noah Sennhauser and Alex Langton, whose final match was the epitome of tennis excellence. Their volleys and serves were the talk of the town, the strokes of genius that had the spectators on the edge of their seats. It was, by all accounts, the most riveting gentlemen’s final Shiplake has ever witnessed—a display of sportsmanship that will be etched in the annals of the club’s history.

In short, the Shiplake Open was a grand slam of social and sporting delight, a testament to the enduring charm of lawn tennis.
