Shiplake Medalling in Canada
Rowing

Following on from Team GB and England’s respective success at the Coup de la Jeunesse and Home International Regatta, all eyes turned to the U19 World Rowing Championships that took place in Canada. Last year, Freddie Middleton (23B) and Jess Weir (23B) both won gold medals in their events and this year, we had THREE pupils competing at the Championships.

Competing in the Junior Men's eight, William Harper and his crew won an epic gold medal where they led from the start and dominated the final all the way to the finish line. Following earlier success at the Championships and in the season, the result means that Team GB are reigning senior Olympic/World Champions, U23 Champions and U19 Champions in that boat class for the second consecutive year.

On the women’s side, we had Amelia Westbrook and Emily Downing racing in the Junior Women’s eight event. They raced a strong race to take home the silver medal which is a fantastic achievement and means that all three of our pupils are World Championship medallists which is phenomenal.

Speaking on our pupils’ performance at the Championships, Director of Rowing Mr Currie says:

‘I’m absolutely delighted with what William, Amelia and Emily have achieved for Team GB. It’s fantastic that our programme continues to produce athletes of this calibre and I’m delighted to be welcoming back two – William and Amelia - for the 2024-2025 as Year 13 pupils.’
