With rugby fixtures postponed during the week and an exeat weekend, attention turned to our hockey and football teams for their respective matches against Reading Blue Coat School. While the results were not what we would've wanted, there were still plenty of positives to take.
U18A Girls' Hockey vs Reading Blue Coat School
On Wednesday 21 September, the Shiplake girls’ hockey team started their first game strongly and skilfully - having new players made the Shiplake side powerful and intimidating. Blue Coat started as the dominating team, however the Shiplake girls were not put off and felt confident in their abilities. The girls went in with a great attitude and a strong mindset. E Young, C Watthey, M Berry and H Boddy made some great tackles and their defence was immensely off-putting to the opposition.
At half time, the score was 3-0 to Blue Coat, with R Allen in goal saving many attempts at the target and diving to save the ball. Shiplake kept a positive attitude and came back challenging Blue Coat, having some incredible break throughs from the attacking end with O Parkin creating some great passes and showing immense skill.
As a team, Shiplake had some great shots on goal, but fell just short, with the match ending 6-0 to Blue Coat. Well done to R Allen who received player of match and played unbelievably well as goalie and to O Parkin who received players' player of the match.

1st XI Boys' Football vs Reading Blue Coat School
A strong performance from Shiplake resulted in a 2-0 loss due to a lapse in intensity towards the end of the first half where we conceded two quick goals. However, promising performances from H Palmer-Garett, T Barley, F Hawkes, T Gill and J Cooper showed just what the team are capable of. Positive possibilities and a good defensive structure should hopefully allow for an interesting fixture for our Friday Night Lights game against Blue Coat in March 2023.
