Sports Report

Sport has returned to Shiplake College. The football pitches beckon and the netball courts call; we've missed this and so have you! In the first Sports Report of 2024, we catch up on all of the season openers for our footballers and Lower School netballers. Featuring thrilling games and high scoring matches, this feature is not one to be missed!

Football

1st XI vs The Oratory

The 1st XI started the season with a lot of possession and only conceding goals from set pieces. The second half came with a penalty to The Oratory before C Kerrison's volley from outside the box sailed over the keeper. In the 80th minute, however, we conceded a sloppy free kick that resulted in the team losing 2-1. H Palmer-Garrett won Player of the Match for his incredible work in between the sticks.

1st XI vs Pangbourne College

A great first win for the 1st XI that showed a dominant performance with Pangbourne only getting a foothold in the match very late on. Quality finishes from A Moth and T Gill saw the team go into the dressing room 3-0 up at half time. A lapse of judgement and a last-minute penalty saw the game end 3-2.

2nd XI vs The Oratory

An excellent first half saw Shiplake lead 2-1 at the break. Goals came from O Renwick, who volleyed in L Spence's pin-point cross, before S Chambers converted from close range. The Oratory scored early on in the second half and, despite S Chambers hitting the post, Shiplake could not find a winner. Then, in the closing stages, The Oratory were awarded a penalty, making the final score 2-3.

2nd XI vs Pangbourne College

WHAT A TEAM PERFORMANCE! The 2nd XI always looked like a team that would be hard to beat today. From keeper to striker, from beginning to end, the team play was courageous and played with hard work and quality. The game was very much in the hands of Shiplake who dominated possession throughout the game. The team played a confident style of football with build-up play from the back, lots of passing and moving, and some superb runs from the boys upfront. A well-deserved first win of the season. Goals came from O Renwick, L Spence and four from S Chambers

3rd XI vs The Oratory

A hard-fought game that was evenly matched and was close to the final whistle. E Pratt provided the Shiplake equaliser. There were excellent performances from J Reed, E Pratt and J Greig-Bartram, with M Redding making some super saves and dominating his penalty area throughout.

3rd XI vs Pangbourne College

The RED TERROR has rolled into town! Double figures for the fighting 3rds, with total dominance from start to finish, dashing hat-tricks from F Stewart and J Grieg-Bartram, with an IRON defensive performance marshalled gallantly by W Forster and J Reed.

Player of the Match: F Stewart
Coach: Mr J Player

U16A vs The Oratory

The boys had a disjointed start and lacked cohesion in defence, going 4-0 down at half time. Greater physical competitiveness saw the best period for Shiplake, bringing the score to 4-1 after 25 minutes in the second half. However, there were two late goals for The Oratory after Shiplake took their foot off the gas. Final score was 6-1 to the opposition.

U16A vs Pangbourne College

A huge win from the U16s especially as they were playing against an U18s side. The team played some great football through the midfield thanks to M Jacobs, F Baikie and F McCalley which saw C Zhou score two in the first half. The second half saw two goals from D Seraille and a goal of season contender from F Baikie to finish the game 5-2.

U16B vs The Oratory

In the first half, the best chance of the early exchanges fell to Shiplake, but the opposition goalkeeper made a great stop. The game was in the balance until a long pass split the Shiplake defence for The Oratory attacker to finish well. A second goal followed just before half time and just before the final whistle, Shiplake hit the bar from close range. The second half against The Oratory was a different experience, losing the half 6-0. Many of the goals conceded were of our own making with simple defensive errors.

U15A vs Pangbourne College

The U15A season opener was a thriller.

Under the leadership of I Doherty, the boys started the game quickly and moved the ball around the pitch well, utilising the 3-5-2 system we've worked on during the week perfectly, to overload Pangbourne whilst attacking and defending. At times, it looked like we had an extra 1 or 2 players due to the tenacity of S Lingard, D Litchfield and D Johnson-Greenwood in the midfield, with F Anderson-Williams stepping up from CB when needed. It didn't take long before the running off the ball created space for our front men to go on and score. At half time, Shiplake were comfortably 3-0 up.

In the second half, two early goals turned the remaining 20 minutes or so, rather simple, but all boys involved kept their positional discipline and demonstrated real maturity to ensure we kept a clean sheet. It is so difficult to pinpoint one or two key players in this fixture as every player was genuinely excellent and more importantly, demonstrated great sportsmanship for the entire 60 minutes. But, on this occasion, D Litchfield was awarded Player of the Match.

U15B vs Pangbourne College

The U15Bs opened their season with a comfortable win over Pangbourne. From the start, they played with purpose, pressing high and passing through the opposition midfield. Four first-half chances were converted, with M Jobson's long-range effort the pick of the bunch. They did well to keep their shape and concentration against the chaos they were up against, and they did not allow themselves to sink to the level of their opponents. Changes at half time saw T Ridout, who scored two good goals, take the gloves for the second half and make a number of key stops. As the game wore on, we lost our shape and were exposed at the back too frequently, but J Morgan and W Revell made some great covering tackles. The final score was 6-0. A hat-trick for J Zacharias to go along with T Ridout's brace and M Jobson's stunner.

Player of the Match: M Jobson
Coach: Mr J Ralph

U14A vs The Oratory

Although it was the first game of the season, Shiplake looked like a team that had played together for years! The fluidity of passing and movement was incredible with lots of one-touch football and Shiplake made it difficult for The Oratory to get much of the ball. T Williams made it 1-0 with a superb left footed strike across the keeper into the bottom corner. In the second half, much of the same continued with great passing and teamwork. H Biggs was next on the scoresheet with a curling effort from outside the box beating the keeper into the far corner. T Williams wrapped up the scoring with his second goal and after beating two defenders, coolly slotted it into the back of the net. The Oratory got a consolation goal in the dying embers of the game with a long-range strike looping into the top of the net. A fantastic start to the season from the team.

U14A vs Marlborough College

The 14As had a tough test against an excellent 15As squad from a strong sporting institute. Far from being overawed Shiplake started strongly with captain D Siddiqui and O Jomar creating the opening chances of the game. However, with the game in the balance midway through the first half Marlborough took the lead. Despite some fantastic tackling and defensive play with excellent saves from C Cooper, a second arrived just before half time. Momentum from this goal gave Marlborough a huge lift as the second half started. Two goals arrived in quick succession shortly after the re-start. Shiplake continued to battle well in the midfield with R Surplice, W Hunt, Z Sanders and E Tavinor combining well down the left-hand side while T Jomar, J Ellison and S Crisford had some excellent interchanges down the right. Unfortunately, Shiplake couldn't find that killer pass or shot in the final third to test the Marlborough keeper.

As the second half entered the final 15 minutes, the fresh legs from an inflated subs bench as well as the age, size and physicality of Marlborough told. In the second half, GK I Morris kept out several efforts but there was little he could do about the final three goals. One of which was a well struck penalty into the top corner. A tough test for the lads against opposition who were a year older, but the experience and learning from this will be of benefit as we move forward.

U14B vs The Oratory

A battling performance from the 14B squad who came back to level the game in the last few minutes. We used almost two separate teams in each half to include everyone and all players should be proud of their efforts. Lots to take on board as we look ahead to the rest of the season.

Coach: Mr P Jones

U14B vs Marlborough College

An excellent performance from the 14Bs against Year 10 opposition. We showed great spirit to get stuck into much bigger opposition, allowing them no time on the ball. We also showed excellent awareness to move the ball around our bigger opponents and into space. Having been 3-1 up in the second half, we unfortunately couldn't keep out a few long-range efforts from Marlborough who levelled the scores with a few minutes remaining.

Player of the Match: C Broad
Coach: Mr P Jones

Lower School vs Bulmershe School

Our first football fixture of the season, as tradition dictates, was a mass informal tournament against Bulmershe School at the brilliant Goals Astro Complex. With around 120 players from both schools competing, there were a huge number of small-sided games with each year group having 5 teams and everyone playing each other. Results were not recorded but needless to stay, there was an abundance of goals scored and a real combination of wins, losses and draws. It certainly promises to be an exciting season!
