Sports Report

In today's Sports Report, we catch up on the latest round of fixtures that took place on the football pitch, basketball, and netball courts. These include the two big events of the week: Leighton Park's Finals Tournament for our senior netball girls, and our boys' 1st XI's Friday Night Lights fixture against The Oratory.

Basketball

Boys' U14s vs John Madejski Academy

The U14 basketball team took on John Madejski Academy, who specialise in basketball and have strong links to Reading Rockets. Shiplake were struck with a shockwave of clinical attacks from JMA and found themselves 14 points down in the first quarter. After a positive team talk, Shiplake came flying back out and thanks to great defending from S Cripps and great attacking from J Pickering, got the score back within 6 points going into half time. The game began to level out again with both teams making good use of their attacks with C Peng leading the line with superb rebounds at the hoop. Unfortunately, the slow start in the first quarter was enough of a lead for JMA to run out winners 45-30.

Boys' 1st XI vs The Oratory School (Friday Night Lights)

Friday Night Lights was a night to remember for all. A slow start from Shiplake saw two quick Oratory goals with the Vikings going in 2-0 down at half-time. With some impactful subs and the crowd behind them, the mighty Vikings managed to score a front post corner by C Kerrison that sparked a massive momentum swing in the game. Then, A Moth scored in what he described as "the best moment of his life" with a half volley from outside of the box.

The final ten minutes saw Oratory pepper Shiplake's back four and a free kick outside finally saw Oratory go 3-2 up! However, with 5 minutes of added on time and all of the Oratory players rushing off the pitch to celebrate, the referee started the game as all the Oratory players were off the pitch allowing Shiplake to score to make it 3-3. This resulted in a penalty shootout that did see Oratory walk away with the trophy and bragging rights for this season. However, the tenacity and discipline showed by Shiplake's players on the pitch was extraordinary and commendable. Final score was 3-3 AET, and 5-6 to The Oratory in the shootout.

Girls’ 1st XI vs Cranford School

On Thursday afternoon, the girls' football team took to the pitch for one last time this season to play Cranford House. Having previously played Cranford earlier on in the season, and loosing 6-0, the girls knew they had a lot of work to do on the pitch. From the second the whistle blew, Shiplake played with grit and determination to ensure a different outcome to last time. Cranford were strong, however Shiplake did not let that stop them and after winning a corner, S McDavid saw the chance and took a shot. Within the first 15 minutes of the match, Shiplake were 1-0 up, and so was our confidence and energy! It was clear how far the team had come since we last played Cranford, and this was visible as we shortly secured the second goal of the match, with F Lenthall taking the score to 2-0. Cranford put up a strong fight, but with the talented defence of L Schoenmaker's, L Price, G Weedon and G Wyndham-Smith putting on the pressure, no goal was conceded. After a quick team talk from Mr Cooper and Miss James, Shiplake were ready to head back onto the pitch and maintain our lead. Now with the wind in Cranford's favour, and a committed opposition, Shiplake struggled to gain as much possession of the ball, and everyone put in great efforts to defend our goal. G Weedon stepped in to goal and made some great saves, allowing M Spooner to play the field. Her talent was on show as she ran down the pitch, battling off the defenders and managed to get yet another goal for Shiplake, making the score 3-0. After our third goal, both teams continued to fight for another, however the match finished on a 3-0 win for Shiplake. It was such a great way to finish the football season, especially for the Year 13s. Thank you Mrs Lovelock for setting up the season and thank you so much to Miss James and Mr Cooper, as always, for their dedication and enthusiasm - not only from this match but throughout the season. All the girls are super grateful for the effort!

Boys’ U13B vs Cokethorpe School

The game started with Cokethorpe dominating. Some great tackles were made by J Filippetto and T Lane while H Woodward was solid in defence stopping every man who tried to get past him. There were many more great runs down the wing from H Williams and O Thorpe and with J Filippetto getting the ball just outside the box and making an amazing cross, O Thorpe slotted it in. With the first half ending, our defence was going strong with O Owens and M Lewis holding the line but unfortunately, Cokethorpe got a lucky pass allowing them to tie the game just as the halftime whistle blew.

We started the second half with Cokethorpe scoring three goals but as our defence lifted its game, they did not allow any of their attackers through allowing O Thorpe to do some great running on the wing where he was awarded a free kick. His shot rebounded off the keeper and S Vedhara was there to tuck in another goal. G Dallas made a great run down the wing allowing J Filippetto to get a shot on goal and make it 4-3 to Cokethorpe. In the last five minutes O Owens showed strength and composure to score, tying the game at 4-4. A huge mention to E Morgan who kept us in the game with amazing saves.

Boys’ U12B vs Cokethorpe School

In an unforgettable display of skill and teamwork, Shiplake College triumphed over Cokethorpe School with a 9-0 win. The game saw Shiplake dominate from the whistle with a combination of good passing, running forward in numbers, and an unwavering determination. M Brown opened the scoring for Shiplake, setting the tone for what was to become a goal fest. His early strike was a glimpse into Shiplake's offensive approach, which seemed to catch Cokethorpe off guard. Not long after, E English found the back of the net firing in a cross and doubling Shiplake's lead. After the break, A Gern-Cross dribbled round defenders and finished calmly before G Leach and J Hunt both bagged braces. D Stewart added his name to the scoresheet, further showcasing the depth of talent within the Shiplake squad. Their goals exemplified the team's collaborative spirit, with each player contributing to the overwhelming pressure exerted on Cokethorpe's defence. The team's comprehensive victory was not just a display of their offensive prowess but also highlighted their disciplined defence, and the strength of T Maskell, M Brown and M Rousseau-Cox kept Cokethorpe's strikers frustrated. However, J McDavid claimed Player of the Match by controlling the midfield and scoring a delightful free kick that curled over the keeper into the top corner.

Netball

Girls’ U18s Netball Tournament

It has been such a brilliant netball season this year with nearly 40 Shiplake girls taking to the court each week. Shiplake entered three teams into the U18 Netball League, with a total of 24 local school teams competing every Wednesday afternoon.

Match play has been very competitive, especially for the B and C Teams, who were playing teams above them each week.

On Wednesday 13 March, we had a tournament at Leighton Park School where the girls showed how fantastic their spirit and determination has been all year. The girls played so well, working together as a squad and brought fantastic energy and enthusiasm to the whole day. The A Team ended the day 3rd place out of a total 8 teams and the B and C Teams both ended up 6th out of a total 8 teams each.

Well done to our fantastic Captains this year – A Botterill, R Acton and E Flower. They have been amazing at leading their teams in training and matches every week and we are all really proud of them.

A huge thank you also to the netball coaches - especially to Miss James and Mrs Rojas who have been an immense help this year and the girls have loved having them as their coaches.

Going forward, there are some exciting netball events to look forward to at the end of this term such as the Staff v Student Netball Match, Old Viking Netball Match, the Inter-House Netball Tournament and the Year 7 and Gilson Netball Tournament. It will be a fabulous way to end a brilliant netball season.

Girls’ U12s vs St Joseph’s School

Last week, the Year 7 netball girls were in action against St Joseph’s School. Both teams played brilliantly with the B team losing by just two goals. They led the whole game until the last quarter, pipped in the scoreline 8-10. Players of the Match were A Woodward and A May.

The A team had a fantastic game full of fluid netball and it was clear to see that the girls really clicked! The final result was 32-4 with Players of the Match going to D Crisford and A Mertes.
