Sports Report

Competitive fixtures are the order of today's Sports Report where over the weekend, we had block rugby fixtures against The Oratory School. Meanwhile on the hockey pitch, our U13 girls were in action and in our girls' U18A match, there was late drama at the of their first fixture of the season.

Girls’ U18A vs The Marist School

On Wednesday 11 September, the girls’ senior 1st team played The Marist School in their first match of the season. The game started off with The Marist in possession, playing the ball around the pitch which led to them scoring a goal in the first quarter, however the girls didn’t let this dampen their spirts. We got our heads back in the game and worked even harder.

During the match there was some amazing attack from T Gillard with some of the best runs down the wing, as well as some amazing play from A Godfrey, F Rait, B Sauboua, and F Dix. This strong attacking side lead to us scoring a goal in the second quarter from I Forrest. In the third quarter, Shiplake’s defence stayed strong with good tackles from T Nicholson, A Flower, L Dix, I Woolfrey, and O Clarke, as well as some outstanding work in goal from M Spooner. Coming into the fourth and final quarter, the girls knew that it would be tough with the score being 1-1. The Marist School’s attack was strong, and they scored a goal with 5 minutes to go.

However, the girls kept their heads up and gave it their all for the last 5 minutes; during this Shiplake gained two short corners just as the final whistle blew. When the final whistle blew, we knew we had to score a goal in order to draw. The Marist School put up a strong defence, but Shiplake’s attack was even stronger, and we managed to score in the final short corner of the game. This was the best start to the season and the girls performed exceptionally well with the game ending 2-2.

Player of the Match went to A Godfrey, Players’ Player to T Nicholson, and Coaches' Player to T Gillard. Best of luck to the 1st team for their match next week and congratulations for such a positive start to the season!

Girls’ U13s vs Claires Court School

Our U13 A and B teams were in action on Tuesday 10 September away against Claires Court with both teams playing resiliently. Unfortunately, the A team lost 3-0 but again the result didn't reflect the quality of the match. This was an even game where some excellent skills and ability were demonstrated by both teams. C Edwards displayed tenacious defending clearing many attacks. We are now developing our attacking strength in training! Player of the Match was A Mertes and Coaches’ Player was C Edwards.

The B team were triumphant with a 4-2 win. M Green had a stonking match and assisted three goals and scored one herself! Special mention to A De Felice for demonstrating wonderful teamwork and stepping up to play as goalkeeper, doing a wonderful job in the process! Player of the Match was M Green and Coaches’ Player was A De Felice.

Rugby

1st XV vs The Oratory School

The 1st XV started well in a physical contest and seemed to have a handle on The Oratory. With the score 3-15 at the half, the boys felt they were in the game. However, we eventually paid the price for missing three starters at fly half, centre, and in the front row. This combined with a small bench saw Oratory control possession and take the game away from the 1st XV. A valiant effort and with a full-strength squad certainly a chance for a closer game.

Final score: Shiplake College 3-32 The Oratory
Coach: Mr R Edwards

2nd XV vs The Oratory School

The team started well with an early try from E Barnes and in the first half, the team looked in good form by overturning multiple line outs and had very good shape. As the game went on, through fatigue and the lack of subs, we all became tired which resulted in The Oratory coming back and taking the lead. The game finished 26-17 to The Oratory, with a special mention to E Barnes for scoring a hat-trick."

Final score: Shiplake College 17-26 The Oratory

U16A vs The Oratory School

It was a tight start as O Bailey led the forwards to gain ground. However, it was Oratory who broke through from a lineout to take the early lead. Shiplake rallied and turned over the ball just inside their 22 for S Baker to muscle the ball over the line. Oratory’s number 10 was causing problems, making ground and set up another try, but Shiplake found weaknesses in their backline, and the backs put on the pressure. S Lingard kicked long for a chase, which D O’Brien executed perfectly to level the scores at half-time.

The Oratory drove forward in the 2nd half, but Shiplake held their line. After a long spell of pressure, tired legs and gaps in Shiplake’s defence appeared, leading to a flurry of Oratory tries. Disappointment at the final whistle, but plenty to take into training as we look forward to the next game.

Final score: Shiplake College 10-35 The Oratory
Coaches: Mr A Dix & Mr J Cooper

U15A vs The Oratory School

The U15As started strong against The Oratory scoring four tries in the first 15 minutes. Some great attacking play by O Woodward allowed the Shiplake backline to show their pace out wide with tries from B Lee, S Crisford, O Woodward and O Spearing.

Shiplake's forwards continued to run hard at The Oratory defence allowing B Oliver to score from the halfway line beating three defenders. Some great tackling by R Stewart in the second half meant Oratory couldn’t gain momentum in attack.

Final score: Shiplake College 65-5 The Oratory
Coach: Mr J Wheeler

U15B vs Oratory vs The Oratory School

As Oratory only had 8 players, we played 8v8 touch on half a pitch. Without (much) complaints, Shiplake rose to the challenge and played an extremely competitive match. Tries scored by Z Miles (x2), C Cooper (x2), Z Sanders, L Tate and G Wang. We finished with 20 mins of mixed 11 v 11 with three Shiplake boys joining The Oratory to help fill up numbers.  A really nice way to end a sunny Saturday morning of rugby played in the best spirit!

Final score: Shiplake College 35-5 The Oratory
Coaches: Mr B Gingell & Miss E Povey

U14A vs The Oratory School

A great win for U14As in a very competitive match. The Oratory were big, strong and skilful and dominated the first half with Shiplake 19-0 down at half time. The team showed real resilience to learn from their experiences in the first half and stopped The Oratory scoring in the second half by putting together some great phases to score four unanswered tries. The U14Bs and Cs also did really well in their 4-way touch tournament with all three of the Shiplake teams beating The Oratory in the touch games.

Final score: Shiplake College 24-19 The Oratory
Coach: Mr M Hindley
