Today's Sports Report includes many positive results from across the sports! In hockey, our Lower School girls were on fire in their matches while our boys' rugby teams recorded many wins in their block fixtures. Meanwhile, our senior basketball team got their season underway and in skiing, Year 13's Scarlett Ferguson was in action at the National Schools Snowsports Association (NSSA) Southern Championships!
Basketball
The U18 boys' basketball team faced off against Reading School at home on Tuesday 2 October in a match brimming with energy and drive.
Shiplake kept the game close in the first quarter, scoring 6 points and conceding 13. However, the game got away from the home side in the second quarter, ending the half 12 points to Reading's 27. The Shiplake side didn't lose their determination and defended the Reading offence very well in the half-court in the third quarter. Unfortunately, the bottom of the net eluded the Shiplake players as well, leading to a fierce and tense third quarter, but with a largely unchanged score at its end: 14-33.
Tiredness set in in the final quarter on both sides, leading to turnovers and therefore more full court fastbreak play from both teams. Scores continued to go up for both teams, but Reading's scoring stepped up a gear within the final quarter of play. Score at final whistle: 21-57.
There were many strong individual performances from our Shiplake team in this first fixture. In particular, N Bandor and I Powell were impressive on the defensive end and with their determination to snag rebounds, as well as this being their first game representing Shiplake for basketball. Looking ahead, working on effective off-ball movement and playing as a team will be crucial to future success.

Hockey
4 Lower school girls hockey teams were in action on Wednesday 2 October.
The U12s played Leighton Park at home and in their two matches, the girls worked excellently as a team and were able to develop their attacking skills, keeping the ball quick and on the stick. The A team won 8-0 where Player of the Match was A Longden and Coach’s Player S Owens. The B team won 5-0; Player of the Match was E Merry and Coach's Player was A Greer.
The U13s played Luckley House away. Again, two matches where the girls played confidently, and their communication and application of new attacking skills saw some great goals scored. The A team won 5-2; Player of the Match was L Jones and Coach's Player was L Hourd. The B team won 8-4 where Player of the Match was D Crisford and Coach’s Player was E Campbell.
