On today’s World Mental Health Day, Thursday 10 October, we are delighted to announce the launch our very own Health and Wellbeing Hub!
HWB is a central point of contact for students to seek support and guidance from managing stress, seeking support for mental health, mindfulness and seeking advice on matters such as sexual orientation, gender identity and much more.
Equality and Diversity Lead, Mr A Jones, says:
‘Here at Shiplake College, we pride ourselves on our three Is - Inclusive, Individual, Inspirational. We are always looking for new ways to grow and help our students and as an inclusive school, we fully appreciate that there will be times when our pupils will need help and support for several reasons outside of the classroom. Thus, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for students to reach out and seek that support.
In essence, we wanted a way for our pupils to know that help is only a short email click away and as a result know that they are never alone. With that, our new platform, HWB, was born.
HWB is our one stop for Health and Wellbeing and allows students to get support on a whole host of issues. Whether it's for mental health, wellbeing ideas, access to mental health first aiders, LGBTQ+ advice, or just to find a listening ear; support is on hand.
HWB is monitored by several trained staff to ensure that any query gets the appropriate and best response. This way, we are making sure that everyone feels included, but also that they are treated and supported individually.’
Additionally, at breaktime today, the Great Hall was buzzing as pupils from across the whole College gathered for hot chocolate, cookies, and a chat. Mingling amongst the pupils were the College’s Prefects and Chapel Wardens and it was great to see them chatting about a number of topics from mental health, school activities, and music tastes!
World Mental Health Day didn’t stop there though as in the evening, our Prefect and Chapel Warden team gathered in the Lecture Theatre to begin their training to become certified peer listeners! This will form part of an open-minded and non-judgemental service which will allow individuals to work through tough times with support from peers.
