Sports Report

In today's Sports Report, we catch up on the latest round of fixtures from the week. In football, our girls' 1st XI got their season underway with two matches, while our rugby boys were in action throughout the week. An in hockey, we had six teams in action over the course of the week with teams in Lower School and the Sixth Form taking to the pitch!

Girls’ 1st XI vs TASIS School

On Monday 14 October, the girls' 1st football team played TASIS school. Throughout the first half, Shiplake dominated possession with lots of attacks from our midfielders A Flower, F Fisher, K Pittman and M Spooner, and our strikers T Gillard and T Nicholson, along with amazing defending from M Mundy, S Pendlebury, E Fisher and B Sauboua which stopped any counterattacks coming from TASIS. Our goalkeeper made sure that they did not have any shots with her impressive clearances. Our first goal of the season was scored by T Gillard, which boosted our motivation and led to more attacks and another fantastic goal from A Flower. The girls demonstrated their confidence and talent and overall played a really positive and impressive first half. After a quick talk at half-time, we were straight back on the pitch and maintained most of the ball possession for the rest of the match. TASIS did get some attacks through, but our defenders and keeper kept them under control with some great tackles and passing. Two more goals were scored from T Nicholson and M Spooner, as well as many more shots from T Gillard, B Sauboua and A Flower. The final score of the match was 4-0 and we should be proud of how we played – our attacking and shooting has improved so much, as well as our confidence on the ball, which is really important. We overall played a great match and look forward to the next! Player of the Match went to T Gillard, Players’ Player to A Flower, and Coach’s Player to K Pittman.

Girls’ 1st XI vs St Edward’s School

On Thursday 10 October, the girls' football team played their first match against St Edward’s School. Despite this being our first time playing together as a team, and a few of the girls’ first time ever playing in a match, we all played incredibly well and put in our best effort. After an unlucky goal in the first 15 minutes, the girls did not let this demotivate them and dominated the rest of the first half with some great shots from M Mundy, T Nicholson, T Gillard and A O'Shea and some amazing tackles from our defenders S Pendlebury, E Fisher, and O Clarke. After a team talk with Mr Cooper and Miss James, we were ready to head back out onto the pitch. The second half proved difficult, with St Edward’s playing stronger than ever, however despite having many shots throughout the second half, our defence and keeper played strongly and started many counter-attacks. There were two unfortunate penalties, which we all thought would up the score, however, our keeper did not let that happen, phenomenally saving both, leaving everyone overjoyed and bringing back motivation to the team. This motivated many more efforts in attacking, with some great runs from T Gillard, K Pittman and A Flower and a few more shots on goal. The match ended with an unfortunate loss of 2-0, but for our first match everyone played extraordinarily well, and this sets us up perfectly for a promising season! Our Player of the Match was T Gillard with her fast pace and ball skill, and Coach’s Player was E Fisher for being a strong and impressive defender.

Hockey

Girls’ 1st XI vs The Oratory School

On Wednesday 9 November, the Girls’ 1st XI played The Oratory in our weekly league fixture and from the first pushback, the level of hockey was high and competitive! We saw great attacking runs from F Rait, I Woolfrey, F Dix and A O’Shea and with possession constantly changing and the level of play remaining high, it was 0-0 at half time. During the second half, we saw some great tackles from T Nicholson, O Clarke, and some amazing saves from M Spooner in goal. However, throughout the second half The Oratory, scored three goals through short corners. The girls kept their spirits high but when the final whistle blew, the result was 3-0. This was the best hockey we have seen from the team this year however and the girls really left everything out on the pitch. Player of the Match went to T Nicholson, Players’ Player to I Woolfrey, and Coach’s Player to M Spooner.

Girls’ 2nd XI vs Reading Blue Coat School

On Wednesday 9 October, Shiplake girls’ 2nd XI played Reading Blue Coat School in our third match of the season. The match started off strongly with great communication from the girls, and some high quality attacking from E Erb using lovely technique keeping consistent possession of the ball. After some strong play from the attacking side, S Fergusson scored a great goal for Shiplake within the first quarter of the game. After celebrating our goal, we continued to put in our best efforts, with K Pittman making some great saves. Despite exceptional effort from the girls and some lovely play, RBCS managed to get two goals in by the end of the match. Our well-deserved Player of the Match went to A Holden for some excellent attacking today. Well done to all the girls and thank you to our coach, Mrs Dunn
