Shiplake College Remembers
Chapel and Assemblies

On one of the most solemn days in the Nation’s year, we remember those who have fallen in conflict and continue to pray for those on active service at this time.

On today’s Armistice Day, Monday 11 November, the whole College gathered in the Skipwith Courtyard for a short Act of Remembrance, led by the College Chaplain, Revd Medlicott. This year, as is tradition for the Art Department, our art scholars, Rev, and Year 8 pupils created five large paper poppies that are on display in the Great Hall. The poppy has been a symbol of remembrance and hope since the First World War, when this flower was seen growing on the battle-scarred landscape of France. This is famously recorded in the poem by Lieutenant John McCrae, who wrote In Flander’s Field

While Year 12 pupil Elliot Jones played The Last Post, the College observed a two-minute silence before the Rev, Headmaster, Head and Deputy Head Chapel Wardens, and Joint Heads of College made their way to the Parish Church. There, they laid a wreath on the brass memorial to The Honourable Captain Anthony Phillimore

On Remembrance Sunday - Sunday 12 November - parents, pupils and staff gathered in the Great Hall for our traditional Service of Remembrance. This was also led by Revd Medlicott and included readings and prayers from the Headmaster, Mr Howe, and from some of our Chapel Wardens.

At the start of the service, the College banner and CCF wreath were brought to the altar by representatives of the College CCF – Charlie McLaughlin and Archie Heading, while the College wreath was carried by Joint Head of College Ben Stokes

In An Act of Remembrance, everyone stood as the names of those recorded on the First and Second World War memorial boards in the Parish Church, together with others who have fallen in conflict whom we had been asked to remember by name. With the Headmaster leading the congregation in Remembering, all observed a poignant two-minute silence in between the playing of The Last Post and the Reveille both of which were once again played by Elliot Jones.

The College Voice Ensemble was in fine voice for the occasion singing After the War by Gross & Keele, arranged by Sirett and in The Address, we heard from the College Bursar, Mr Dixon, who gave a moving address speaking of his own experiences, as well as those of his grandfather, and his own fellow comrades.

At the end of the service, the College banner, CCF wreath, and College wreath were carried out of the hall before a group from the College gathered alongside other members of the Shiplake Community at Shiplake War Memorial for a short Act of Remembrance. There, the College wreaths were placed down by Charlie McLaughlin and CCF SSI Mrs Hanlon.

The College is grateful to the hard work and dedication of Mrs Haynes and the Vocal Ensemble, Mr Jones and the College Wind Ensemble, Elliot Jones for playing the Last Post and Reveille, Mr Dixon, Mr Elliott, Prefects and Chapel Wardens. For CCF SSI Mrs Hanlon and all the members of the CCF for their help and support; and for Mrs Jiggens, staff in the Art Department, and art scholars for producing our lovely lit poppies.
