On Monday 11 November, a group of Year 9 art students embarked on a trip to The Natural History Museum and Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford to spend a day collecting and creating artwork to help them with their future studies.
Teacher of Art, Miss Platt, writes the following:
'We left Shiplake early in the morning and students arrived at The Natural History to begin exploring the two floors filled with natural forms, skeletons, and taxidermy.
On these two floors, students took part in a series of drawing tasks which enabled them to practise and refine their observation skills. The Year 9 pupils thoroughly enjoyed being up close with a range of insects, dinosaur, and animal skeletons and were even given the opportunity to touch some of the taxidermy available including a brown bear.
After exploring The Natural History Museum, we went to The Pitt Rivers Museum, which is an extension of artifacts and collections of thousands of objects from different periods of time. The students were broken up into groups to explore the three floors to enjoy the space and to refine their drawings. Students completed some well executed tonal and biro studies on a range of artifacts including textiles, masks, and ceramics.
The afternoon was spent outside in the sunshine and students used this time to show each other the outcomes they had created throughout the day. Additionally, the pupils had the opportunity to draw some of the historical architecture in Oxford.
I would like to thank the students for an outstanding day out. The Art Department looks forward to teaching you GCSE art and I would also like to thank Mr Grover for assisting with the trip.'
