On Wednesday 13 November, a group of our pupils attended the inaugural Environmental Science Fair held at Henley College. Organised by climate action group Greener Henley and supported by the town council, it was fantastic to see our pupils representing the College at the fair.
At the event, our pupils had to teach themselves a scientific experiment which demonstrated a particular type of pollution and then following this, spent 90 minutes teaching it to a carousel of local primary school groups. In total, 120 children from 16 schools took part and we were proud to be one of the secondary schools at the fair facilitating activities.
Following the event, we received a lot of positive feedback from teachers at these schools. A teacher from one school described Will Griffith (Year 11) and Thomas Rowe (Year 11) as 'natural teachers' in the way they engaged the young primary school pupils and adapted their questions to suit their age. Theo Berry (Year 10) was also highlighted as being exceptionally mature, enthusiastic, and engaging for the young pupils.
Well done to the following pupils who attended the event:
- James Middlehurst
- Matthew Perry
- Will Griffith
- Thomas Rowe
- Will Nicholas
- Theo Berry
Thank you to Teacher of Geography and Chair of the Eco-Committee Mr Burrows for accompanying. Following the fair, he adds:
‘This was an event where local primary schools got to interact with secondary schools, and I can say with confidence and pride that our boys represented Shiplake College with exceptional maturity, confidence and enthusiasm.
They had the children captivated on their table with demonstrations of how everyday substances can get into our water system, and were passionate in their need for water companies to do more to improve the filtration systems in place to ensure that our rivers are safer, less polluted places for us all to enjoy.
It is also worth noting that many of these pupils had exceptionally busy days with other school activities, yet they were still able to offer this level of commitment and excellence.’
