Hockey Night Lights is the highlight of this week’s Sports Report as we catch up on all the sports fixtures that took place throughout the week! As well as that memorable Friday match, we had block rugby fixtures against new opponents, as well as our senior rowers competing at the GB early ID trials in Boston.

Girls’ 1st XI vs St Joseph’s College (Hockey Night Lights)
On Friday 15 November the girls’ 1st team played their HNL fixture. In the buildup to the game, everyone was feeling the nerves but ready to go out there and put on their best performance. The game started with Shiplake in possession where we saw strong attacking play and teamwork from A Godfrey, I Woolfrey, F Dix and A O’Shea. Throughout the 1st half, Shiplake were awarded many short corners where during one, T Nicholson scored to put us up 1-0. As the first half progressed, Shiplake scored another two goals, ending the 1st half 3-0 up. When the second half started, the girls got straight back into it with good tackles from T Nicholson, A Flower, O Clarke and S Bhambra. During the second half, Shiplake was awarded another short corner where A Godfrey scored. At the final whistle, the score was 6-0 to Shiplake with two goals coming from T Nicholson, two from B Sauboua, one from P Hart and one from A Godfrey. Player of the Match was F Dix, Players’ Player was T Nicholson, and Coach’s Player was A Godfrey. We are so unbelievably proud of the performance the girls put on as they have worked so hard this season as a team. The win was definitely deserved and has put us in high spirits for our last few matches of the season.

Girls’ 1st XI vs Reddam House
On Wednesday13 November, we took on Reddam House in our weekly league game. The intensity of the game was high with strong passages of play from both teams. We saw amazing attacks from A Godfrey, B Sauboua, and F Dix where we were awarded many short corners - in one of them a goal was scored by A Godfrey putting Shiplake up 1-0 at the end of the first half. The second half was some of the best hockey we have played with strong defending from T Nicholson, O Clarke, I Woodfrey and A Flower. Many short corners were also saved by M Spooner in goal. When the final whistle blew, it was 1-0 to Shiplake, and we are so proud to win one of the toughest matches of the season. Player of the Match was S Pendlebury, and Coach's Player was A Godfrey.

Girls’ 2nd XI vs Reading Blue Coat School
Last week, the Shiplake girls’ 2nd XI took on Reading Blue Coat School for the second time this season. The game opened with both teams working hard to gain possession of the ball. I Davenport-Thomas, making her debut performance for the 2nds, worked through the midfield and made some good links with the forward play of T Stewart. Shiplake had some good runs up the pitch with C Thomas intercepting the ball on numerous occasions. When under pressure at the back, the defence of M Rider, R Dewar, L Nicholson and S Fergusson kept their composure to clear the ball out to our attacking side. Unfortunately, the opposition managed to score in the last minute of the first half. Shiplake had two focus points for the second half, which were strong tackles and keeping the ball wide. A lucky goal came for the opposition, and this then saw three more goals being scored. However, this did not dishearten the determination of Shiplake. A Holden and B Redstone were soon on the attack looking to get the ball into the opposition’s ‘D’. This was definitely a game of two halves and Shiplake can walk away from this match knowing that the first half was a significant improvement from last week's game. Player of the Match went to A Holden. Well done to the girls and thank you to our coach Mrs Dunn.

Girls’ U13 vs St Gabriel’s School
The U13 girls’ A and B hockey teams took on St Gabriels at Shiplake last week. Both matches were fantastic, fully sided (including goalkeepers!) with the U13 As playing their first competitive short corner with some excellent tactical awareness.
The A team won 5-0 with goals scored by L Jones (4) and D Crisford. Player of the Match was D Crisford. The B team drew 0-0 in a very competitive match with Player of the Match going to E Campbell and A Woodward.

Rugby
1st XV vs Reigate Grammar School
A long bus journey and a disjointed arrival at RGS prompted a scrappy start to the first half for the 1st XV. RGS were very strong defensively throughout the game and the referee allowed plenty of contest at the breakdown. The boys in maroon and white failed to react to the conditions, physical environment, and referee and quickly found themselves 12-0 down. Things settled but Shiplake struggled to find any rhythm in attack and scrambled to keep RGs at bay for the remainder of the first half.
The second half saw tactical adjustments made and Shiplake spent the entirety of the half camped in the RGS 22. However, that stern RGS defence remained the dominant element of the game, and the 1st XV failed to break through. But RGS tired, and their kicking game got more and more inaccurate. This led to two moments of brilliance. A poor kick fielded by full-back O Perkins was returned with interest as he touched down in the corner for the first Shiplake try late in the second half. The second saw a signature K O'Connor run, released by the skilful play of W Huckle and A Mullens, saw Shiplake score under the posts in the final play of the game. The conversion cooly slotted by A Mullens and some level of redemption was felt.

U16A vs Reigate Grammar School
Against a very strong opposing back line, Shiplake again did not press enough in defence to put them under pressure. When Shiplake had the ball, mistakes were made in the first half. Some ‘soft’ tries were conceded but also some fine ones by Reigate. Shiplake showed they could play with some strong carries towards the end of the first half and into the second but then kicked or turned over possession. Injuries did not help but there were patches of increased tempo, which allowed H Tilney to score. Other highlights were the explosive carrying from No. 8 E Fulton and counter attacking from H Terrington. The side know to ‘pick themselves up,’ train well on Monday, and have every confidence going into Wednesday’s game.

U15B vs Reigate Grammar School
The first half saw our boys take time to find their feet in the game. We caused an early knock-on gifting them the ball and an early try. Shiplake then started to play some phases off set piece, but we clumsily lost the ball in a ruck and a great kick and pick up from the opposition resulted in another try. We had another go stringing great passes together but with a lack of going forward, eventually another mistake was made resulting in another try. After a half-time chat about positivity, the boys switched it on! Awesome runs from R Rotheram pulling defenders opened space for Z Miles to run a great try in under the posts. Tackles started to come in from I Morris, R Surplice, T Jomar, P Grewal, while L Tate hassled the 9 stopping the opposition from gaining space. We conceded another try, but heads didn't drop. Relentless effort saw I Morris run in a try while P Grewal almost scored again at the very end. A game of two halves with Shiplake winning the second 12-7.

U14A vs Reigate Grammar School
Another great, very hard-fought game and arguably our best performance against a very physical, well organised Reigate side. It was encouraging to see us compete very hard at the breakdowns and defend so tightly. Both our tries came from excellent passages of play, with forwards and backs producing multiple phases to break down the opposition. A strong result against a strong team.

U14B vs Reigate Grammar School
This proved to be a fantastic game of rugby not only with a resounding scoreline, but also with some impressive handling and tackling on display that made the difference in this contest. The game started tremendously with a brilliant counter ruck then leading to a brilliant score in the corner. Shiplake's fast start was further capitalised on when some brilliant running lines opened the Reigate defence, resulting in a try being converted in the corner. Reigate soon after responded with some cheap penalties being given away that resulted in Reigate being able to score a try of their own. However, this didn't stop Shiplake continuing to play some fast-flowing rugby, with some impressive pop-offs culminating in two more tries being scored before half time. The second half started a bit scrappier with some handling errors starting to creep in that allowed Reigate to gain a bit more of a grip onto the game. Despite this fast Reigate start, some individual brilliance from T Siveter enabled Shiplake to score the first try of the half. Reigate did soon respond with a try of their own, but this only ignited a resurgent Shiplake that, through incredibly quick handling and clear outs at the ruck, went on to win the game 47-12. Special mention to T Siveter who scored a hat-trick of tries.

Rowing
We had a record breaking 18 athletes making the trip to Boston for the GB early ID trials, with an amazing set of results. An outstanding performance from Ed Galer and Henry Day-Clark saw them finish 7th and 8th in junior men, while Amelia Westbrook placed 3rd in junior women. Well done to the following who competed: Otto Berg De Kerangal, Alice Dargue, Henry Day Clark, Isaac Dean, Rupert Evans, L Fiddy, Tilly Foreman, Edward Galer, Felicity Hudson, Luca Hunt-Davis, Alice Knight, Inigo Markham, Aston Phillips, Zac Powell, Finlay Rhys Jones, Will Tavinor, Tomos Weighell, and Amelia Westbrook.
