Classroom Meets Coast: Normandy 2024
Trips & Visits

At the start of the half-term break, our Year 8 pupils travelled to Normandy on a French-History trip. In today's Whole School Assembly (Monday 2 December), we heard all about the trip with the following coming courtesy of Year 8 pupils E Evans and K Pivonk:

At 3.00am on the day before our half-term break, everyone came to school to meet and board the coach for our long journey. On arrival, our first destination was Honfleur, which is a picturesque port in Normandy dating back to the 11th century. It grew from trading with North America and Asia from the 16th to the 19th centuries and is known for its beautiful 17th-century harbour and timber houses.

On the second day, we visited the historic town of Bayeux where we saw the famous Bayeux Tapestry, an 11th-century embroidery depicting the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. We also visited the Bayeux Cathedral - a stunning Gothic structure - and the Bayeux War Cemetery, which honours the soldiers who died during the Battle of Normandy in World War II. We had lunch in the local market and had time to explore the town. Sadly, Mrs Parrott wouldn't let us buy a live chicken for 13 euros! It was a very busy day; we also visited the Arromanches 360 circular cinema at the Juno Beach Centre and the British Normandy Memorial.

On the third day, we went to Caen. In Caen, we visited the Memorial de Caen and watched a movie about it. Caen is known for its historical buildings built during the reign of William the Conqueror, who is buried there.  We also went to Colleville-sur-Mer, where we visited the Normandy American Cemetery. This cemetery honours American troops who died in Europe during World War II. Later in the evening, we went bowling where we witnessed Mr Player absolutely demolish Mr Bosomworth in a game!

On the final day, we checked out of our hotel and went to Fort-Mahon-Plage where we had a nice walk on the beach. Fort-Mahon-Plage is a seaside resort known for its sandy beaches and dunes. On the way to the ferry, we stopped at a hypermarket and had an hour to explore and buy souvenirs. We boarded the ferry and made our way home, arriving back at school late and very tired.

We had a great time and would definitely go again. Thank you very much to Mrs Parrott, Miss Lane, Mr Player, and Mr Bosomworth for organising and taking us.
