Today's bumper-packed Sports Report not only includes the scores and reports from our hockey and rugby fixtures, but also news of individual sporting success in equestrianism and fencing.
Equestrianism
Year 12 pupil Emily Fisher competed internationally in show jumping over the half-term break. Firstly, in Holland, Emily jumped 5/6 clear rounds and took 5th place out of 40 as well as 8th place in the 1m 40 Grand Prix. On week two, Emily competed in Belgium and across the two weeks she was placed 9th out of 100+ riders in the junior rankings. Well done Emily!
Fencing
Earlier in the term, we reported on Year 11 pupil, James Middlehurst, following his success at the Welsh Fencing Open and today we bring news of further success. Competing at the Scotland Wheelchair Open Championships, James took gold in the men’s category. And despite a sobering 5-0 loss in the beginning poules rounds, James bounced back to take the overall champion in the mixed category as well. Well done, James!

Girls’ U18A vs Claires Court
On Wednesday 27 November, the girls played their final league match against Claires Court. We knew that this would be a very close match due to the teams being even in level. From the first pushback, Shiplake had possession with amazing skills and runs from A Godfrey, I Woolfrey, A O’Shea and B Sauboua. However, even though our attack was strong, Claires Court managed to find space which led to them scoring in the 1st half. Heading into the second half, we kept our heads up with strong tackles and good defence from T Nicholson, S Bhambra, A Flower and O Clarke; we also had some amazing saves from M Spooner in goal. This strong defence meant that we were able to clear the ball out of our half and down the pitch which led to A O’Shea scoring a goal. Final score was 1-1 but this was such a close game to end the league season on and I am so proud of the improvement and dedication of the girls throughout this season. Player of the Match was A Godfey, Players’ Player was A O’Shea, and Coach’s Player was A Flower.

1st XV vs Magdalen College School
A tired and injury riddled 1st XV turned up to play a well drilled and motivated MCS. Ultimately a game that should have been close got out of hand quickly due to the additional drive and physicality coming out of the MCS camp. There were a few bright sparks like captain H Benton's relentless efforts and W Huckle and A Mullens' determination, but a lacklustre effort meant Shiplake were found wanting. A bit of a wakeup call that sends a message through camp: taking an opponent lightly despite your talents can lead to disappointment. A good lesson but not one we would be expecting our 1st XV to have to learn at this stage of the season. A much-improved performance is expected against Pangbourne in order to cap what has been a very successful season.

U16 vs Magdalen College School
A huge win finally on the board for Shiplake’s U16s. A real team performance; all the training we have been working towards paid off where lots of offloads and good line speed saw us score an early try after some hard carries from all the forwards, especially E Miot and D Litchfield. The back moves were also flowing exposing space out wide thanks to S Lingard and F Holgate’s quick thinking and tactics. One of the plays of the game was A Invest carrying hard for 20m inside our own half and four players from MCS having to take him down, followed by some quick ball and offloads leading to us scoring a real team try. Well done to our try scorers – S Lingard, F Holgate, S Baker, E Miot, L Hilton, M Jonson, F Fisher, and E Fulton.

U15B vs Magdalen College School
The best game the U15Bs have played! I was really impressed with their positive attitudes today and their support for one another. We started off with great intentions and strong runs. However, a turnover and missed tackles led to an early try for the opposition. The opposition almost scored again, but Shiplake put in the biggest try line defence we've seen from them so far and managed to prevent the try and gain a turnover. Using this momentum, the boys worked all the way up the pitch with strong runs leading to a try. Going again, we created a great overlap for another try on the line followed by a conversion. The second half saw multiple trys each side and 22-22 would have been a fair result for both teams. Unfortunately, in the last five minutes Shiplake, fatigued, let in two tries resulting in a loss. Nevertheless, proud of the phases they put together, and their positive attitude they displayed today.
Final score: Shiplake College 22-32 MCS
U14A vs Magdalen College School
Another pleasing result even if it wasn’t our best performance. The first half was marked by individuals taking opportunities to score some excellent breakaway tries, most notably G Huckle who scored another hat trick - his 5th of the term - including a full length of the pitch solo effort. By half time it was 31-0, and we scored quickly after the break to go 38-0 up. Unfortunately, it was downhill from there. Concentration and intensity slipped, allowing MCS to score three tries. So, lessons to learn as we go into our final game of the season.

U14B vs Magdalen College School
Despite Shiplake coming out victorious, this was undoubtedly a game of two halves. Shiplake absolutely sprinted out of the blocks, scoring a try directly from the kick off with some hard running lines and brilliant handling seeing A Palmer score in the corner. This then set the tone for the rest of the half where Shiplake were able to counter quickly in the rucks and use their quick handling to score once again in the corner. MCS grew slightly more into the game when they started to come out on top in the scrums, but this was short lived after Shiplake scored a brilliantly worked try with a flying finish from H Durkan. This then brought an end to the half with Shiplake 19-0 up.
However, as soon as the second half started there was a real change in intensity from MCS and the momentum swung in their balance. Shiplake were unable to make any real metres in the game with MCS becoming more dominant in the rucks. Although, to our credit, we still prevented MCS from entering often into our 22. With penalties from Shiplake starting to build, it then eventually saw Shiplake reduced to 14 with a yellow card being brandished for repeated offences halfway through the second half. This then gave MCS an extra drive and presented MCS with the opportunity to gain full control in the game and reduce the deficit to 19-7. Some brilliant defensive tackles at the end from the likes of O Houldsworth and J Colligan ensured the U14s held on for a 19-7 win. Ultimately, a very competitive and fun morning of rugby.

U13A vs St John’s Beaumont School
Having played them before, we knew it would be a tough match. True to form, SJB's lighting fast centre made several decisive runs and quickly racked up the try count. Going into halftime, we were down four tries to none. The Shiplake players huddle was full of positive comments and we knew we had the upper hand in the rucks. Quick out of the blocks in the second half we rallied and with good tackles and quick hands, we were back in the game. Two tries resulted from L Moss and O Wray to lift the home supporters' spirits. Unfortunately, injuries and a war of attrition with SJB's larger pack took its toll and we conceded four more tries. A spirited performance; we never gave up and can be proud of a good team effort.
