After the previous week's cancellations, it was fantastic to see so many fixtures being played throughout the week! The College's sports pitches were a hive of activity with football being played on our Phillimore Fields Pitches and netball being played on our new Paddocks Site AstroTurf!

Boys’ 1st XI vs St Benedict’s
Shiplake made a very tentative start to the game with lots of loose first touches and passes allowing St Benedict's to gain an early foothold in the game. With St Benedict's just that little bit sharper, they were able to take the lead within 15 minutes. However, once the boys got their composure back and started to try and play out of the back, gaps in the Benedict's defence began to show. With numerous opportunities to score prior, it then fell to L Spence who was able to tap in a cross at the back post after a well worked move from the back.
After the break it was clear the momentum was with Shiplake and the high pressing line forced errors from St Benedict's. A goal from a corner from S Lingard deservedly put Shiplake 2-1 up, however St Benedict's were able to reply quickly and forced a 2-2 draw.
Final score: Shiplake College 2-2 St Benedict’s
Girls’ 1st XI vs Cranford School
The girls’ football 1st team played a great game against Cranford House on Thursday. Already since our last two matches, we have seen incredible improvement as a team and individually as players in this very close match. In the first half, there was some amazing defending from S Bhambra, S Pendlebury, A Godfrey and E Fisher, who made it incredibly hard for Cranford to get any shots through, whilst also starting some good attacks from the back. Our midfielders (M Mundy, A Holden, A O'Shea and F Fisher) and strikers (T Gillard and T Nicholson) brought some good balls through and played determinedly, resulting in some shots on goal. Unfortunately, there was a sneaky bottom corner shot which made it past the keeper, leading to a 1-0 score to Cranford. At half time, we were all exhausted and had a motivational team talk from Miss James and Mr Cooper. In the second half, S Bhambra played in goal, whilst M Spooner played in centre midfield, with some incredible saves from S Bhambra and some good runs and balls through from M Spooner. In this half, we played amazingly as a team, dominating the game, and Cranford struggled to get the ball into our half. T Gillard and T Nicholson were quick on their feet up front and got several balls through, whilst A Godfrey was a strong defender and started many attacks. We had several shots on goal, however unfortunately the final score remained 1-0 to Cranford. Our Players’ Player was B Sauboua as she played so well, especially in the second half, with her impressive throw ins and great defending. Player of the Match was A Godfrey with her unbeatable defending, skilful dribbling and starting some great attacks. Coaches' Player was A O'Shea, as she showed off her skills in midfield, making her a challenging opponent to the other team. Overall, we all played so well as a team and should be proud of our fast improvement and progress this season.
Final score: Shiplake College 0-1 Cranford School

Boys’ 2nd XI vs St Benedict's
Despite a slow start in the 2nd XI's first game of the season, the boys battled well, winning their individual battles and stringing together some promising patterns of play. Some good football in the midfield put K O'Connor through at goal, and when he was brought down in the box, D Higgins calmly stepped up and put Shiplake 1-0 up.
The boys showed maturity at half time and recognised what needed to change in the 2nd half to control the game and in the 2nd half, Shiplake dominated possession and started to play a brand of football we've been working on in our training sessions. Two second half goals for J Webb completed the scoring for Shiplake and the match ended 3-2; a great way to start our season as we look forward to our first league game on Wednesday afternoon.
Final score: Shiplake College 3-2 St Benedict’s
Boys’ 3rd XI vs St Benedict's
Good first win for the fighting 3rds with a 2-0 win over St. Benedict's. W Jennings and Captain K Tanner with the goals in what should have been a game with far more Shiplake goals.
Final score: Shiplake College 2-0 St Benedict’s
Boys’ U15A vs UCS
It was a very tough game for the Shiplake U15A as they were up against a very strong UCS side that proved to be far more efficient in front of goal. The boys were determined throughout and despite the large scoreline, they continued to try and play on the front foot.
Final score: Shiplake College 0-8 UCS
Boys’ U15B vs UCS
The U15Bs had a tough first half but came back with a new attitude much more switched on after half time. E Tavinor scored two excellent goals in the second half.
Final score: Shiplake College 2-7 UCS
Boys’ U14A vs UCS
Following our win on Wednesday, a lesson in composure on the ball and passing was served up by a dominant UCS side. The fact Shiplake went into half time 1-0 ahead with a worldly strike didn’t reflect the details of the game. In short, UCS were much better in the midfield and wide areas with some super interchanging of passes. A dominant second half saw us concede three goals but for some outstanding defensive play from W Huckle, H Durkan, B Keown and Player of the Match G Hotston, the difference would have been much greater. A tough second half in which Shiplake weren’t able to get any sort of foothold in the game. We look forward to our next game on Tuesday.
Final score: Shiplake College 1-3 UCS
Boys’ U14A vs Sir William Borlase's Grammar School
A new season, new system and new players contributed to an emphatic win this afternoon. Goals in the first half from H Sargent (2) and J Filippetto gave us a 3-2 lead. Some lovely interchanges of passes between J Waldegrave, L Currie, A Webb, T Steward and L Ellison setting up the goals. The third goal in particular started from I Sahota in goal! Borlase didn’t touch the ball from this move until it was in the back of the net. The final result of this move was a delicious step over by H Sargent leading to a tap in for J Filippetto.
Going through the gears in the second half, Shiplake resumed control going 4-2 then 5-2 ahead. A sloppy penalty was conceded giving Borlase some momentum, but this was snuffed out by two further goals - our ruthless nature in front of goal and speed of transition proving too hot for Borlase. H Sargent ended with four goals and rightly the Player of the Match award. A special mention also to the defensive line of W Huckle, B Keown, H Durkan and G Hotston. A fine start to the season and lots to be pleased with.
Final score: Shiplake College 7-3 Sir William Borlase's Grammar School
Boys’ U14B vs UCS
The team started their campaign against UCS on a cold Saturday morning. Captained by E Hills, Shiplake started brightly and missed a few early opportunities. UCS slowly grew into the game and in the 18th minute took the lead with a well worked goal down the left-hand side. Shiplake kept pushing but we just struggled with our final pass in the last third and against the run of play, UCS doubled their lead minutes before half time.
After a quick pep talk at half time and a change in formation, Shiplake once again pushed forward and created several great opportunities and dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half. UCS must be credited for some incredible defending, and they played some great football to keep Shiplake at bay. The last 15 minutes of the game was incredibly open as both sets of boys tired and opportunities were missed by both sides. Final whistle came and UCS won 2-0. The Shiplake boys never gave up and there were some excellent performances throughout the team. Lessons have been learnt, and we hope to take that into our next game on Tuesday afternoon.
Final score: Shiplake College 0-2 UCS
Boys’ U12A vs Sir William Borlase's Grammar School
A very competitive fixture that was decided by very small margins and just that bit of clinical finishing in front of goal. It was a great performance from all involved and is a good sign for the rest of the season.
Final score: Shiplake College 2-4 Sir William Borlase's Grammar School
Boys’ U12B vs Sir William Borlase's Grammar School
A tough start to the season for the U12Bs against a very strong Sir William Borlase team that resulted in a final score of 6-2. Despite struggling against superior opposition, we continued to battle and at times played some lovely football. It was just rewards for all the efforts to score a penalty that T Sales clinically put away. I am sure with lots of training and hard work things will continue to improve and I know the team is looking forward to the challenge.
Final score: Shiplake College 2-6 Sir William Borlase's Grammar School

1st VII vs Reading Blue Coat
A brilliant start to the competitive season! The 1st team played away at our local competitors, Reading Blue Coat. The team played exceptionally well, using teamwork and strong connections through the play. We managed to come away with an excellent win of 53-44. We are looking forward for a very competitive and challenging season ahead but are confident we will give it our all. A special mention to our Players’ Player, E O'Neill, Coaches' Player, A O'Shea, and Player of the Match, M Mundy.
Report: M Mundy, 1st VII Captain
2nd VII vs The Abbey
As our first match together as a team, I believe that we got closer together by the end of the match even if we were missing some of our key players. The match started as a tight game for both teams, but unfortunately the opposition were able to get a few goals during the first quarter. However, A Holden was able to get some amazing goals in and there was some amazing attacking by F Dix and E Fisher. Player of the Match was F Dix, and Coaches' Player was K Pittman. I can't wait to see how the team progresses throughout the season.

3rd VII vs Reading Blue Coat
On Wednesday 15 January, the Shiplake 3rd VII played their first league match of the season against Reading Blue Coat. In the first quarter, Shiplake won the first centre pass leading to six goals from M Spooner and B Sauboua. Shortly going into the second quarter Shiplake scored their 7th goal through I Woolfrey with the assist from A Rawlinson. Going into the third quarter, another goal was scored by M Spooner while there was some great defence from B Broad keeping the ball out of the opposition’s third. The game ended with the score 13-16 to Reading Blue Coat but despite the loss, Shiplake remain motivated for our next game. Players’ Player went to L Dix and Player of the Match went to B Broad.

Lower School vs St Gabriel’s Newbury
On Wednesday 15 January, five teams played St Gabriel’s School with three Year 8 teams and two Year 7 teams. All matches were played on our fantastic new astro and it was wonderful to see such a hive of activity from Lower School girls’ sport.
The Year 8 C team lost 14-6 but there was some fantastic phases of play from the girls. Player of the Match was A Williams. The Bs lost 11-7, and the As won 14-12 in a tight match. The As were trailing until the last quarter before turning up the heat to finish with a confident win. Player of the Match was D Crisford.
The Year 7s were away and we saw two excellent results from the girls in their first ever netball matches representing Shiplake College. The As won 8-4 with E Walton Player of the Match. The Bs won 19-1 with A Edimoh Player of the Match.
