In today's Sports Report, we catch up on the many fixtures that took place over the previous week. In football, there were block fixtures against Gordon's School and Abingdon School. Meanwhile, three of our senior netball teams were in action while our U12 girls took part in a hockey county tournament. Finally, we saw more rowing action at the Wycliffe Head.
Football
Boys’ 1st XI vs Gordon’s School
Shiplake made a very slow start to the game with Gordon's chain pressing causing a real problem for Shiplake to build up from the back. This led to a flurry of early Gordon's chances and saw them fly to a 2-0 lead. However, through some more composure on the ball, Shiplake started to create some brilliant patterns of play. This led to a well worked move down the right with a brilliant cut back resulting in a good finish from L Spence. The second half started in a similar manner with Gordon's on top and Shiplake being very nervy around the back. But a brilliantly worked set piece saw C Kirkwood head home to make it 2-2. The game became very edgy until a Shiplake counter down the right saw the ball fall kindly for F Baikie who tucked the ball home. Some brilliant saves from Player of the Match J Hills left Shiplake 3-2 winners.
Final score: Shiplake College 3-2 Gordon’s School
Boys’ 2nd XI vs Gordon’s School
The 2nd XI remains unbeaten this season after beating a strong Gordon's School team 1-0 through a R O'Boyle goal in the first half. In a slightly different game to ones previously, our lads dug deep and worked hard to stay ahead and our high work rate, domination in tackles, and strong defensive unit frustrated the opposition as they couldn't find a way in. It was a difficult battle throughout, but our boys once again came out on top and as our momentum continues to grow, so do our hopes of an unbeaten season. We look forward to travelling away for our third league game of the season on Wednesday, before a well-deserved weekend off. A special mention to Player of the Match H Arnold for stepping up to represent the 2nd XI again today and helping us keep a clean sheet.
Final score: Shiplake College 1-0 Gordon’s School
Boys’ 3rd XI vs Gordon’s School
A tough game and a narrow defeat but the lads had to dig deep, and I'm pleased with what they put in, but the result was fair.
Final score: Shiplake College 0-2 Gordon’s School
Boys’ U15A vs Abingdon School
Final score: Shiplake college 6-2 Abingdon School
Boys’ U15B vs Abingdon School
The game was a very evenly matched contest with both teams showing an ability to counter attack. Shiplake were the first to make use of the space in behind the defence with good through balls leading to a goal and then a penalty that was neatly tucked away. Abingdon came back into the game with a goal of their own but heading into the second half, Shiplake scored two quick goals to take a 4-1 lead, and this is how it stayed for the majority of the second half with neither the team able to dominate. A late consolation goal by the opposition finished the game off.
Final score: Shiplake College 4-2 Abingdon School
Boys’ U14A vs Abingdon School
Shiplake’s U14As produced a masterclass first half performance at Abingdon to go in at half time 4 goals to the good. Our 3rd goal (playing out from the back) involved the whole team and 15 passes later, a cool finish from J Filippetto sent even the opposition parents into a round of applause. A special moment for the boys having worked so hard in training leading up to this game. Two goals from H Sargent set us on our way. And the tenacity of Z Roberts added the icing just before half time. The second half started in a similar vein. Shiplake pressing, passing, moving, using the wide areas with A Webb, T Steward and L Currie creating havoc in the Abingdon defence on the wings. G Hotston, G Huckle, B Keown and H Durkan were rock solid in defence and L Ellison dictated terms and pulled the strings from midfield. A fine finish from L Waldegrave and two more from H Sargent put the game to bed. As systems, formations and subs rotated, the chaos and confusion (clearly intentional from the coach) led to concession of two goals. With minutes to go, we came back with J Hughes slotting a penalty after being upended in the box. A final and important mention to H Perkins and I Sahota for subbing into Abingdon’s goal for a half each. Well done to this pair, deservedly earning the Player of the Match awards.
Final score: Shiplake College 8-2 Abingdon School
Boys’ U14B vs Abingdon School
Shiplake were immediately on the front foot with D Mellor pulling the strings with some beautiful passes. The deadlock was broken after 20 minutes when T Siveter burst down the right-hand side, drifted past two defenders, and tucked the ball away into the bottom corner. Brimming with confidence, the boys continued to attack but were kept at bay by some last ditch defending by Abingdon. With five minutes left in the first half, Shiplake were awarded a corner. Up stepped our captain, E Hills, who took the corner and whipped it high and curling into the top corner of the goal, giving the Abingdon keeper no chance. We made a raft of changes which allowed E Lloyd and R Macdonald an opportunity to make their debuts. The second half started much the same as the first with Shiplake pushing for their third and after ten minutes, T Siveter drove forward to smash it past the keeper and make it 3-0! Abingdon started to get more of a foothold in the game and Shiplake's defence were called in to action on a few occasions. They held firm and with ten minutes left, H Williams jinked into the box and put the game beyond doubt with a beautiful individual goal. With the last kick of the game, we unfortunately lost our clean sheet and Abingdon scored but the boys played some lovely football. Onwards and upwards onto the next game against Wellington!
Final score: Shiplake College 4-1 Abingdon School
Netball
1st VII vs The Marist School
It was a tough match against The Marist School, but we played well, used all connections through the court, and worked as a team throughout the whole game. Unfortunately, we walked away with a loss. It was a brilliant competition between the two teams, and we will be ready next week to hopefully win at home. A special mention to Player of the Match - E O'Neill, Coach’s Player - S Pendlebury, and Players’ Player - M Mundy.
Final score: Shiplake College 28-42 The Marist School

2nd VII vs Claires Court
In our match today, we played Claires Court’s A team but despite that, we played the match with diligence and energy, making sure to keep up with the opposition. The first quarter ended 1-8, but we kept playing through with some amazing centre court skills from F Dix and B Broad, in which we were able to turn the tables and get us a goal scored by F Rait. The last quarter was ours, and we fought back with more power which helped us score another goal and prevented the other team from scoring more. I believe that we have improved since the start of season, and we will continue to improve against strong teams.
Report: M Rider, 2nd VII Netball Captain
4th VII vs Leighton Park School
The match was a challenging one all round with the opposition defending tightly and equipped with incredible shooters and tall defenders. However, the girls never stopped trying their hardest and it was an amazing match for learning and practicing! The highlights included I Forrest and R Clayton defending tirelessly the entire game-with no subbing off. In addition, there was some impressive interceptions on the sides of the court and despite everyone being very tightly marked, A Rawlinson, I Forrest and N Howard-Jones were often able to help get the ball down the court by communicating with each other and creating space when no other options seemed available.

Hockey – Girls’ U12 County Hockey Tournament.
Last week on Friday 31 January, two teams entered an U12 County Hockey Tournament. The B team was a player short due to injury, and then unfortunately lost another player to injury during their first match so played the whole tournament 2 players short! However, due to fantastic team spirit and resilience, they won their final match to make it to the Plate semi-final before unfortunately losing out.
The A team showed excellent hockey throughout the tournament by winning three of their four pool matches, making it to the Cup semi-final. However, it ended in heartache, as with minutes to go, a goal and unfortunate penalty corner meant they lost out 3-1.
There was lots of fantastic play by all individuals involved, but Coaches' Players were P White for never giving up and running her heart out and A Edimoh for absolutely outstanding goalkeeping! An enjoyable day out and Shiplake are on the county hockey map!
