During the February half-term break, a group of our A-level photography and business pupils made the trip to New York, America. Year 13 photography pupil, Lucy Owen, writes the following:
'We celebrated Valentine's Day this year by fastening our seat belts to kick off an amazing five days in New York City. After losing five hours on the journey, our first challenge was staying awake long enough to make it through dinner! Despite the jetlag, we all got up bright and early on Saturday to visit the 9/11 Memorial and go up the World Trade Centre. The memorial was a moving, once in a lifetime experience and going up the World Trade Centre was very cool, but we soon couldn’t see much as the clouds came over just as we reached the top. After this, we grabbed lunch and walked to Times Square, which ended up taking many more hours than planned as Mr Crowe got us lost! We capped off our first day with dinner at the iconic Hard Rock Cafe.
Day two included going to a basketball game at the Brooklyn Sports Centre where we watched the Harlem Globetrotters play the Washington Generals before we then headed up the Rockefeller Centre later in the day to see and capture the awesome views of the whole city from above. Seeing the Empire State Building and Billionaire Row lit up at night was awesome.
The graffiti workshop in Brooklyn was first up on day three where we learned how to do loads of different things from a graffiti artist whose work is all over New York. After the workshop, we walked through Central Park to our dinner spot for the night which was a small Italian place called Bella Luna. Before we knew it, Tuesday had arrived, and it was our last day in New York! Day four entailed going on a 2-hour walking tour of Wall Street, the Business district, and everything around it which was a great experience not just for the business pupils. Despite the cold weather, we made the most of our last day - even though it was -7!
On behalf of myself and all the photography and business students, I'd like to say a huge thank you to Mr Crowe, Mrs Krause and especially to Mrs Hill for organising such a brilliant trip and giving up their holiday time to accompany us. It gave us all an amazing opportunity to experience The Big Apple, build lasting memories, and take lots of stunning photos.'
