POLITICS

Politics A-level provides students with an opportunity to explore the systems, ideas, and decisions that shape the world around us. Studying Politics enables students to gain a deeper understanding of how governments function and how decisions are made. It develops critical thinking and analytical skills by examining real-world events and case studies. It also engages students with current affairs, debates, and global challenges.

Resources

Linked to the History Department, the Politics Department is also situated within the Stableyard. Whilst studying at A-level, students will become used to using a mixture of tools to work from, such as their devices, textbooks and keeping notes safe in a folder.

Additional Opportunities

Although just an A-level department, we try to make sure our students witness and engage with the topics they study. Every year, we take our Year 12 students on a tour of the Houses of Parliament and then the UK Supreme Court. In Year 13, we also take students to see Hamilton in the West End which links well to the creation of the US Constitution. Throughout both Year 12 and Year 13, we also have guest speakers in, such as the local MP or civil servants. And, when the time comes, we enjoy hosting mock elections to get the whole school actively engaged with current affairs.

Curriculum

Students are required to achieve a grade 6 in history or English literature at GCSE in order to quality for A-level politics. We use the Edexcel specification which allows students to analyse three topics in depth, UK government and politics, Ideologies and US government and politics. Students will be asked to write essays which lead them to debate arguments and balance their views, whilst also creating a convincing judgement at the end. A-level politics can prepare you for a wide range of exciting subjects at university and future careers. This A level does not just limit you to politics, it can also support you with a career in law, journalism, business, international relations and many more.
