Sports Report

In today's Sports Report, we catch up with our senior basketball players following their match against Maiden Erlegh, as well as find out what the scores were in the latest round of netball games for our senior girls. And, in football, there were midweek fixtures across the College in addition to block fixtures for the boys at the weekend.

Basketball

The Shiplake basketball first team travelled away to Maiden Erlegh School on Monday 19 February. The team were keen to play after a long break, but sadly were missing a few key players for this fixture. Despite their best efforts, the home side had experience on their side, sporting a couple of Rockets players on their roster, and came out on top at final whistle. Final score was 60-32 to Maiden Erlegh.

Football

1st XI vs Salesian College

A tough away outing against a very strong Salesian side. The game was very much in the balance for 15 minutes before Salesians went 1-0 up from a corner that was headed home. Shortly after, Shiplake equalised thanks to a superb interception from A Mullins who charged down the field before cooling cutting it back for J Biggin to slot into the bottom left corner. Unfortunately, bad fortune and small errors were pounced upon by Salesian who slotted two goals in before the break.

Shiplake came flying out of the blocks and a brilliant passing move ended in A Moth smashing the post before the ball fell kindly to the goalkeeper. Salesian continued to play slick, flowing football and although the Shiplake defence stood strong for the majority, Salesian managed to break us down and slot three more into the Shiplake net. Lots to take away from this game for learning but a good battle that the score line didn't truly reflect.

Final score: Shiplake College 1-6 Salesian College

2nd XI vs Pangbourne College

A dominant display, with good performances all over the pitch. Goals came from L Spence, C Kirkwood, C Nash-Steer and (captain) O Renwick. J Lucking also deserves a mention, having made three superb one-on-one saves.

Final score: Shiplake College 4-0 Pangbourne College
Coach: Mr Miller

3rd XI vs Claires Court School

Another home victory for the mighty 3rds at their fortress of Memorial Ground. M O'Brien scored his first by cutting inside on the edge of penalty-box and then firing into the top corner. The second came from battling down the wing by E Thomas which resulted in M O’Brien tapping in off a rebound and the third effectively killed the game.

Final score: Shiplake College 3-0 Claires Court School

U14A vs Abingdon School

We knew it would be a tough game when we arrived with only 12 players and a few key players missing. Nonetheless, this didn't stop Shiplake from giving maximum effort throughout the game. Abingdon were a very fast and physical side that we struggled to match and fell two goals behind within a matter of 10 minutes. Shiplake then got into their flow and started moving the ball really well with confidence, and D Siddiqui came close when his effort crashed off the crossbar. It looked for the world that Shiplake would equalise but a quick counter from Abingdon and a mix up at the back lead to Abingdon going into the break 3-0 up. Shiplake began to play more intelligent football in the second half and got a goal back thanks to a brilliant finish from O Jomar. Unfortunately, a comeback was not on the cards and Abingdon continued to apply pressure and really turned the screw on our tired legs going on to score 5 goals without reply. Shiplake grabbed a consolation when GK/ST I Morris scored in the dying moments. A valiant effort, but beaten by the better team on the day

U13vs Cokethorpe School

This was a match where resilience was key in clawing back six goals. After a strong start and nifty footwork on the wings by H Williams and C Craig, the pace of the opposition striker was too quick for our midfield and defence, and he slotted home a comfortable goal. The striker put another three goals in before our midfield and attackers threaded neat passes through to L Currie who picked his spot each time to tuck in two outstanding goals to close the gap. O Gilbart-Smith's work rate was exceptional, and he covered defensive and midfield positions with incredible tenacity and skill preventing a number of balls travelling through to their front line. To top it off, he tucked away a confident penalty; an inspirational display. M Lewis was excellent as captain, commanding the back line and modelling the kind of leadership I expect we will see more of from the next match. S Vedhara scored a masterful goal from range and H Lawrence and M Lane were a strong presence in central defence, but even with a further three pin-point accurate goals from L Currie, victory was just out of reach this week.

Final score: Shiplake College 6-7 Cokethorpe School
Coach: Mr Curran

U12 vs Cokethorpe School

The games started out as a close affair when Shiplake College took on Cokethorpe School. It was 3-1 at half-time, but the floodgates opened in the second half. G Leach emerged as the standout performer of the game, netting an incredible hat-trick that set the tone for Shiplake's dominant performance. His ability to find space and precision in front of goal was a constant thorn in Cokethorpe's side. His link up play with A Gern-Cross was notable, who also bagged a brace along with R Collar and G Denning, who both added to Shiplake's tally with their sharpshooting and impeccable timing. F Greenway contributed a goal to the scoreline, rounding off an outstanding team performance.

Final score: Shiplake College 10-2 Cokethorpe School
